Panel Beater Job Description - Duties, Tasks, Skills and Responsibilities

A panel beater is someone who carries out repairs on the frame and bodywork of cars and other vehicles in a car body shop, auto repair shop or garage.

When a customer arrives with an accident-damaged vehicle, the first job of a panel beater is to identify the parts of the frame and bodywork that have been affected, assess the extent of the damage and provide the customer with an estimate of the time and cost required to repair it. Once the estimate has been accepted, the mechanic will repair any scratches and dents on the bodywork (using panel beating techniques, such as planishing and body filling), replace any damaged parts, straighten and align the frame or unibody and, finally, carry out refinishing and repainting. The ultimate goal of the process is to make the damaged vehicle safe and roadworthy and to restore it to its original pre-accident condition. In some cases, auto body mechanics may also fabricate auto parts.

Auto body repair is specialized work, involving the use of specific auto repair equipment, including tools for disassembling and assembling auto body parts, panels and accessories, car benches for straightening frames and unibodies and for performing wheel alignment and balancing, tools for prepping and priming panels (e.g. cleaning, sanding etc.) and a spray booth oven for painting.

A collision repair process in an auto body shop may involve a number of different roles, including:

• Body repair technicians, prep technicians and disassembly/assembly technician
• Vehicle body painters, responsible for vehicle painting and spraying and for carrying out quality control inspections on paint jobs

Typically, panel beaters are either employed in an auto body shop or, in some cases, run their own auto repair business. Alternatively, they may work for a car dealership, car manufacturer or an automotive engineering company.

The main tasks of a panel beater include:

• Carrying out inspections on bodywork and frames of vehicles to assess extent of damage
• Disassembling damaged vehicle parts
• Repairing scratches, dents and other damage to bodywork and replacing any parts that cannot be repaired
• Straightening and aligning car frames and unibodies
• Reassembling vehicle body parts and accessories
• Replacing or repairing windows, car interiors and exterior trim
• Filling and sanding bodywork
• Carrying out painting in booth oven
• Performing final finishing and polishing

In addition to repair work, auto body mechanics may also be required to greet and welcome customers, record incoming vehicle details, provide cost estimates and liaise with insurance companies in relation to accident-damaged vehicles.

To enter the profession, aspiring vehicle body repairers need to acquire a range of basic vehicle repair skills, including panel beating, body filling and sanding. A common route is to gain a technical or vocational school-leaving qualification or a diploma in vehicle body repair, together with practical experience in an auto repair shop.

There are also professional training courses that teach the skills needed to work in an auto body shop, including techniques for repairing cosmetic and structural damage and for working with a range of different materials (e.g. traditional steel, high strength steel, aluminium alloys and composite materials.

A further option could be to move into vehicle painting and spraying and specialize in restoring vehicles to their manufacturers’ colour specifications.

Finally, some auto body mechanics opt to leave employed work altogether and set up their own auto repair business.
