About Our Client

Originally from Melbourne, this company owns and operates a sizeable number of outlets across Victoria and NSW and is currently on a consistent growth trajectory with the view to increasing their national and latterly international footprint.

A recognisable brand, they are beyond the start-up phase but maintain that personable environment with collaboration encouraged.

The firm is leanly staffed so you will be the sole counsel and must be comfortable to provide operational legal support, as well as broader strategic advice to the group to support expansion.

Job Description

The In-House Legal Counsel will primarily focus on franchising and leasing matters, providing day-to-day legal support across the business. You will act as the main point of contact for these legal issues and liaise with internal stakeholders to draft, negotiate, and review agreements.

Where necessary, you will refer complex or specialist legal matters to external law firms and manage those relationships to ensure quality and cost-effective legal services.

  • Provide legal advice on all aspects of franchising, including agreements, renewals, terminations, compliance with franchise laws, and manage any potential disputes (litigation is likely to be referred to external counsel).
  • Draft, review, and negotiate leasing agreements for properties across network.
  • Work closely with internal departments (e.g., operations, finance, and real estate) to provide timely legal guidance.
  • Manage a dynamic workload - that can be high volume and quite project oriented.
The Successful Applicant
  • Qualified Lawyer and able to practice without restrictions in Victoria.
  • Minimum 3 years (but definitely open to more senior level) experience in Franchising and able to provide demonstrable experience in franchise agreements, commercial property leasing etc.
  • First-class communication skills and confidence to pick up the phone and liaise directly with colleagues, franchise partners and external counsels.
  • Willing to do 2-3 days in the office in Fitzroy and engage directly with wider teams and C-Suite, becoming a visible and engaging legal partner.
The client is not particular on previous in-house or practice experience. What is crucial is that you are confident in your ability to manage franchise and leasing work from end-to-end independently. The benefit of this role is that you can act without a micro-manager and take control of your workload and work flows.

That said, you need to be comfortable to work independently without oversight...

  • 2 days working from home;
  • regular socials
  • Early finish Fridays
  • Independent working environment with little interference.
