Role overview

The position leads day to day operations across a mixed broadacre cropping and livestock enterprise in regional Western Australia. The position requires advanced practical skills, sound judgment, and the ability to work independently in remote conditions.

Key responsibilities

Broadacre cropping operations
  • Plan and carry out seeding, spraying, spreading, and harvesting activities using modern broadacre machinery, ensuring accurate calibration and efficient field performance.
  • Monitor crop development, soil conditions, and moisture levels, reporting issues such as pest pressure, nutrient deficiencies, or equipment limitations.
  • Prepare paddocks through cultivation, stubble management, and controlled traffic operations aligned with the farm’s agronomic program.
  • Mix and handle agricultural chemicals safely, applying them according to label requirements and farm protocols.
  • Maintain grain quality during harvest through correct header settings, segregation, and storage practices.
Livestock husbandry
  • Oversee daily livestock care including feeding, watering, monitoring health, and maintaining welfare standards for sheep and/or cattle.
  • Assist with breeding programs, including joining management, pregnancy checks, lambing/calving supervision, and mothering up.
  • Carry out animal treatments such as vaccinations, drenching, and parasite control in line with veterinary and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage livestock movements, drafting, yard work, and transport preparation to ensure low stress handling.
  • Inspect and maintain fencing, water points, and grazing infrastructure to support rotational grazing plans.
Machinery and infrastructure maintenance
  • Conduct routine servicing, troubleshooting, and minor repairs on tractors, harvesters, sprayers, trucks, and farm implements.
  • Keep workshops, tools, and storage areas organised and safe, ensuring maintenance records are up to date.
  • Assist with the upkeep of sheds, silos, water systems, and on farm roads to maintain operational readiness.
Farm coordination and compliance
  • Support the farm manager in planning seasonal workloads, allocating tasks, and guiding junior staff or contractors.
  • Maintain accurate logs of chemical use, livestock treatments, machinery servicing, and production activities.
  • Follow workplace health and safety procedures, identifying hazards and contributing to a safe working environment.
  • Operate within environmental and biosecurity guidelines, including weed hygiene, livestock traceability, and soil conservation practices.
Skills and experience
  • At least three years’ experience in broadacre cropping and livestock operations, ideally within dryland farming systems.
  • Proficiency in operating and maintaining large agricultural machinery and precision ag technology.
  • Strong understanding of animal husbandry, welfare standards, and seasonal livestock requirements.
  • Ability to work autonomously, solve problems in the field, and make sound operational decisions.
  • Physical capability to perform manual farm work in variable weather conditions.
  • Current driver’s licence; HR, HC, or MC licence desirable.
  • ChemCert or willingness to obtain.
Working conditions
  • Full time, on farm role based in regional Western Australia.
  • Seasonal workloads vary, with extended hours during seeding, harvest, and livestock peak periods.
