Manager - Sustainability

Hello. We’re Virgin Australia. And we’re back (in a big way).

We’re the airline that’s always done things a little different. Our way. The Virgin way. For us, flying is so much more than simply taking off and landing (although we understand that is quite important). It’s about going the extra mile, in the air and on the ground, to create authentic experiences that put our guests firmly at the heart of everything we do.

What you’ll be doing:

Reporting to the General Manager, Sustainability, this role is vital for implementing our sustainability strategy and enhancing the Group’s reputation by ensuring our sustainability reporting aligns with industry best practices.

As the Manager, Sustainability, you will oversee the Group's internal and external sustainability reporting, covering our performance, programs, and initiatives. You will also manage the transition to ISSB reporting, ensuring compliance with governance and regulatory requirements, and establishing governance systems to support the delivery of sustainability reports.

In addition, you will contribute to Virgin Australia’s broader sustainability goals.

Other key responsibilities will include:

Oversee sustainability/ESG compliance and external reporting processes.
Develop our approach for managing nature-related risks, aligned with the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD).
Manage the development and of the annual sustainability report and sustainability content for the annual report, ensuring alignment with GRI, Integrated Reporting, and ISSB standards.
Support the delivery of sustainability projects to advance Virgin Australia's sustainability strategy; such as coordinating waste management initiatives across the business.
Monitor and analyse external trends, risks, and developments in sustainability, and advise on their impact and necessary actions.

Support oversight of environmental and greenhouse gas emissions data to comply with external disclosure, assurance, and regulatory requirements, including the NGER Act and Australian Sustainability Reporting Standards.

You’ll be great in this role if you have:

  1. 10 years of experience managing sustainability in an emissions-intensive organisation or a consultancy firm, with relevant tertiary qualifications.

In-depth knowledge of sustainability reporting frameworks and the ability to interpret and apply sustainability theories and processes.

Proven understanding and experience with financial and non-financial management and compliance reporting (e.g., ASRS, ISSB, TCFD, APCO, and GRI).
Exceptional project management skills, with a proven track record of delivering successful outcomes on complex initiatives involving multiple stakeholders.
Strong theoretical understanding of sustainability principles.
Deep knowledge of local and global sustainability practices, including climate change, environmental issues, policy matters, and best practice strategic responses.

Awareness of key ESG developments and benchmarking indices, particularly in sustainability governance, regulations, reporting frameworks, and standards.

What you’ll get from us

This is a fantastic opportunity to directly impact our sustainability strategy. This position has high exposure and the opportunity to drive and influence key business outcomes. Also, we’re committed to looking after you, with some of the best benefits and conditions in the industry – including (but not limited to):

Hybrid work environment (3 days per week in office).
Heavily discounted air travel for you and your loved ones (including $1000 worth of travel credits per year).
