• Host School

The host school for the Shepparton English Language Centre (SELC) since 2008 to the current time is St Georges Road Primary School in the south of Shepparton. The School Principal has the overall responsibility of the school, including the Shepparton English Language Centre, which will operate as a sub-school of the host school.

SELC also has three primary classrooms located in a new relocatable building on the southeast corner of the St Georges Road PS grounds (corner of St Georges Road and John Street). SELC¿s main entrance and office is located opposite 22 Weddell Street, Shepparton.

1. Shepparton English Language Centre

The Shepparton English Language Centre (SELC), based at the Hayes Street Campus of St Georges Road Primary, will be responsible for providing EAL (English as an Additional Language) Intensive English Tuition to New Arrivals students in primary and secondary government schools in the Shepparton Schools District.

In addition to Intensive English Tuition, students are taught some specialist areas such as Mathematics, Physical Education, Art, Music, Science and/or Aussie Skills.

The overall target number for SELC is 65 students each year. Although this does fluctuate, enrolment numbers have only gone lower than 65 students (5 classrooms) during the period of the COVID pandemic.

New Arrival Primary and Secondary students from the Shepparton network of schools will attend the Hayes St Campus full time for a period of 6 - 12 months.

The Shepparton English Language Centre also provides a Visiting Teacher Service. This provides individual, targeted support to local EAL students who have been in Australia between one and five years. Outlying schools who do not have sufficient numbers of students to be able to employ their own staff will be serviced by a SELC teacher who will provide individual, targeted support to EAL Students and support teachers to build the capacity for EAL delivery in each school.

St Georges Road PS as the host school will employ staff on a contract basis, with the possibility of secondment and right of return provisions for ongoing staff in government schools.

Selection Criteria

Applicants must address the following criteria in their application:

1. SC1 Capacity to undertake routine support tasks across a range of functions in one or more work areas within a school environment.
2. SC2 Demonstrated capacity to communicate effectively with members of the school community including students and the capacity to provide support and/or attendant care to students where necessary.
3. SC3 Capacity to work co-operatively with a range of people including teachers, education support, students and parents.
4. SC4 A commitment to professional learning and growth.

1. Support students in the classroom, explain teacher instructions and work requirements.
2. Support teachers¿ general communication with students.
3. Guide the work of small groups, or individual, identified EAL students with specific activities prepared by the classroom teacher and promote English language learning.
4. Assisting with the preparation of EAL teaching aids/resources to support curriculum delivery.
5. Accompanying teachers and students on excursions.
6. Support parents and preschool children in the Community Hub of St Georges Rd PS and the Shepparton English Language Centre.
7. Support the co-ordinator of the Community Hub of St Georges Rd PS and the Shepparton English Language Centre.
8. Support teachers, student welfare co-ordinators and outside agencies to communicate with families, and link the families with services.
9. Assist students and their families with transition from one educational setting to another.
10. Act as a resource to develop staff knowledge of the students¿ backgrounds and the issues they face.
11. Help to involve parents in school activities and programs.
12. Assists school personnel in promotion of multicultural events and activities in allocated schools to raise awareness and celebrate diversity and cultural differences.
13. Attends meetings locally, regionally and state-wide as requested by the allocated schools as directed.

Responsibilities

1. Need to demonstrate proficiency in communication in English.
2. Must be able to communicate in Arabic.
3. Have had experience working with preschool aged children, primary and secondary aged students and adults.
4. Have experience working with students, staff, parents and community members.
5. Have strong interpersonal skills and a preparedness to work with a diverse community in a range of settings
6. Current working with Children Check
7. Hold a current driver¿s licence
8. Use his/her own car (with comprehensive insurance) to travel from school to school.
