Freelancer.com is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Payroll Officer and Assistant Accountant to join our Finance team. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the payroll and assisting with the day-to-day accounting functions of the company.

As a Payroll Officer and Assistant Accountant, you will have the opportunity to work with a diverse range of clients and colleagues from around the world, supporting payments across the globe on both sides of the marketplace.

Payroll Officer Responsibilities:

Payroll Management:

  • Administer payroll processing across four countries, ensuring accuracy and compliance
  • Track, calculate, and update annual leave, sick leave, and other employee entitlements
  • Liaise with outsourced payroll providers, overseeing timely payroll execution and compliance
  • Address and resolve employee payroll enquiries professionally and promptly

Compliance & Reporting:

  • Prepare and submit statutory payroll filings, including payroll tax, workers compensation, and other government-mandated contributions
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant industrial relations legislation, especially in Australia
  • Ensure single-touch payroll (STP) compliance and leave liability accuracy
  • Support the finance team with payroll-related audit documentation

Reconciliation:

  • Perform payroll reconciliations, including payroll tax, superannuation, and related balance sheet accounts
  • Process payroll-related journal entries for month-end reporting

Assistant Accountant Responsibilities:

Accounting Operations:

  • Perform bank reconciliations and payment gateway reconciliations across multiple jurisdictions
  • Manage and post journal entries for accruals, prepayments, and expense allocations
  • Assist in expense payment processing, ensuring accurate coding and approval
  • Prepare and reconcile monthly BAS statements for the group

Month-End Close:

  • Support the month-end close process, including reconciliation of key general ledger accounts and posting of adjustment journals
  • Assist with preparation of monthly management reports and commentary (if applicable)

Audit & Compliance:

  • Assist in compiling audit schedules and supporting documentation for external audits
  • Ensure compliance with internal controls and reporting deadlines

Cross-Functional Support:

  • Provide backup coverage for accounts payable and accounts receivable functions as needed
  • Collaborate with broader finance and HR teams on process improvements and systems alignment
Requirements
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a similar payroll or accounting role
  • Formal accounting qualifications (e.g., CPA/CA or studying towards CPA/CA)
  • Hands-on experience with NetSuite is highly regarded
  • Solid understanding of general accounting principles, including journal entries, accruals, and reconciliations.
  • Strong Excel skills, including use of formulas (VLOOKUP, INDEX-MATCH, SUMIFS), pivot tables, and data reconciliation techniques
  • Proven experience managing a comprehensive Australian payroll function
  • Proactive mindset with a focus on process improvement and operational efficiency
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, particularly around month-end deadlines
  • Strong ability to work independently, handle multiple priorities, and meet tight deadlines
  • High attention to detail, with excellent numerical and communication skills
