About the Role
On behalf of our client, we are seeking an experienced and dedicated Production Horticulture Supervisor to lead their harvest and crop management operations. This pivotal role requires a skilled horticultural professional with comprehensive knowledge of crop production cycles, harvest management, and team leadership.The ideal candidate will demonstrate expertise in precision harvesting techniques, crop protection, and operational coordination, ensuring the highest standards of product quality and production efficiency across our client's sophisticated horticultural enterprises.
Key Duties & ResponsibilitiesHarvest Management & Quality Control
- Implement and monitor rigorous harvest scheduling systems, ensuring all crops intended for harvest have completed mandatory withholding periods and meet quality specifications
- Supervise and optimize harvest operations to suit specific crop conditions, soil moisture levels, and variety characteristics, minimizing mechanical damage and maximizing product quality
- Maintain continuous quality surveillance throughout harvest periods, implementing immediate corrective actions to address any issues affecting product integrity or yield
- Establish and manage comprehensive post-harvest programs, coordinating product handling, cooling, and storage procedures to maintain optimal product condition and shelf life
- Identify and promptly report unusual disease patterns or pest infestations, implementing emergency control procedures to prevent spread and minimize crop loss
- Prepare and apply targeted chemical treatments to control pests, weeds, and diseases, ensuring precise application timing and dosage for maximum efficacy
- Safely transport, store, and manage chemical inventories in compliance with regulatory requirements and company safety protocols
- Operate and maintain specialized chemical application machinery and equipment, ensuring optimal performance and calibration for accurate product delivery
- Oversee the establishment of new horticultural crops, implementing precise planting schedules and monitoring early development to ensure optimal stand establishment
- Perform regular crop regulation activities including thinning, pruning, and training operations to optimize yield potential and product quality
- Coordinate and perform essential shed nursery activities, maintaining optimal growing conditions for young plants and propagation materials
- Monitor crop development stages and implement cultural practices to support healthy growth and maximum production potential
- Ensure all specialized harvest equipment is properly maintained and calibrated, coordinating with maintenance teams to minimize downtime during critical harvest periods
- Liaise effectively with Farm Operations Manager, Shed Production Manager, and Maintenance Supervisor to align harvest activities with overall production schedules and resource availability
- Coordinate worksite activities across multiple teams, ensuring efficient workflow and clear communication between harvest, processing, and logistics operations
- Implement and monitor equipment operation protocols, ensuring all machinery is used safely and efficiently according to manufacturer specifications
- AQF Certificate III or IV in Horticulture, Agriculture, or equivalent qualification
- Proven post-qualification experience in a production horticulture or harvest supervision role within a commercial environment
- Demonstrated experience in crop protection, harvest management, and agricultural equipment operation
- Comprehensive knowledge of harvest techniques, crop physiology, and post-harvest management principles
- Strong leadership capabilities with ability to coordinate multiple teams and work effectively with technical specialists and management
- Excellent problem-solving skills with ability to identify crop health issues and implement effective control measures
- Proven ability to work autonomously while maintaining strong collaborative relationships across operational departments
- Practical, hands-on approach with commitment to achieving production targets while maintaining quality and safety standards
- Strong organizational skills with ability to manage harvest schedules, equipment maintenance, and team coordination simultaneously
- Adaptability to changing weather conditions and market demands with ability to adjust harvest strategies accordingly
