Context:
The Opportunity:The Principal Design Engineer /Project Manager will be client-facing and responsible for undertaking and overseeing significant civil and/or structural design work for rail infrastructure projects. This will involve leveraging your extensive technical expertise and the support of our global technical network.
This role also offers a significant opportunity to develop and apply project management skills, contributing to the successful delivery of projects from inception to completion and fostering business growth in a relatively autonomous capacity within the Western Australian market.
Missions/Main Duties:
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and undertake detailed civil and/or structural design for a range of rail infrastructure projects, including but not limited to track alignment, drainage, earthworks, bridges, stations, and associated structures.
- Provide technical leadership, guidance, and mentorship to junior engineers and design teams.
- Ensure all designs comply with relevant Australian and New Zealand codes, standards (including AS/NZS, ARTC, PTA, and other relevant rail authority standards), and accreditation processes.
- Oversee and manage the technical aspects of project delivery, ensuring quality, accuracy, and adherence to project timelines and budgets.
- Act as a key client interface, building and maintaining strong relationships with clients, stakeholders, and regulatory authorities.
- Prepare and review technical reports, specifications, design drawings, and other project documentation.
- Contribute to and lead design reviews, risk assessments, and value engineering exercises.
- Implement and monitor rigorous quality control and assurance processes throughout the design lifecycle.
- Utilize your developing project management skills to assist in project planning, scheduling, resource allocation, and progress monitoring.
- Actively contribute to business development activities, including preparing proposals, identifying new project opportunities, and representing SYSTRA ANZ at industry events.
- Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, both locally and within SYSTRA's global network.
Stay abreast of emerging technologies, trends, and best practices in rail engineering and design.
Profile/Skills:
Required Qualifications:
- 8 to 15 years of post-graduate experience in civil and/or structural design within the infrastructure sector.
- Chartered Engineer status (CPEng, NER or equivalent) or actively working towards achieving it is highly desirable.
- Demonstrable local civil design experience within Australia or New Zealand, including a strong understanding and application of relevant codes, standards (e.g., AS/NZS, Austroads, relevant rail authority standards), and accreditation processes. Specific experience in Western Australia will be highly regarded.
- Preferred: Significant experience in the design of rail infrastructure. Experience in road, utilities, or mining infrastructure projects will also be highly regarded.
- Proven experience in a client-facing role with excellent communication, negotiation, and presentation skills.
- Demonstrated experience in quality control and assurance processes, ensuring design integrity and compliance.
- Exposure to and aptitude for project management principles and practices. Candidates with formal project management qualifications (e.g., PMP, PRINCE2) or a strong desire to develop in this area are encouraged to apply.
- Experience or a keen interest in business development, including tender preparation and client relationship management.
- Proficiency in relevant design software (e.g., AutoCAD, MicroStation, 12d, CulvertMaster, HEC-RAS, SpaceGass, Strand7, or similar).
