About the role

The Principal Architect provides thought leadership to identify opportunities to take an enterprise approach to transforming a business capability. They take a structured approach to understand business problems, identify synergies across Business Units and create a compelling case for change to invest in delivering enterprise outcomes using shared technology platforms to provide cost effective, flexible, and fit for purpose solutions.
What you’ll be doing
  • Develop and maintain the Retail Transformation architecture strategy and roadmap for digital, sales, marketing, products and pricing, ensuring alignment with business objectives and industry best practices.
  • Lead the architecture, design and implementation of solutions in the Retail Transformation program, including Customer Markets business unit.
  • Collaborate to create the architecture vision and strategy, aligning with the IT strategy, industry trends, tooling, methods, and best practices.
  • Build and foster an architecture community that provides valuable, business-relevant advice for critical strategies and initiatives.
  • Articulate a compelling architectural vision in strategic business terms, highlighting the importance of good architecture and the costs of tactical decision making.
  • Establish collaborative relationships and be respected as a leader in both technology and business.
  • Identify and address previously undetected material risks across people, processes, applications, security, data, and technology.
  • Develop technology strategies including intentional architectures, architectural runways, and transition plans, ensuring alignment with business goals and industry standards.
  • Ensure the correct application of architectural principles, patterns, standards, and policies to solve business problems and opportunities.
  • Guide technology transformation by empowering and growing the team to deliver value through engineering and architectural excellence, simplified governance, modern practices, tools, and automation.
  • Support the growth of the engineering culture by improving the engineering experience through modern tooling, Dev Sec Ops pipelines, cloud adoption, automation, and transformational ideas.
  • Shape investments and drive architectural direction by fostering the re-use of application components, simplifying technology, reducing tech debt, and decommissioning legacy technologies.
  • Create blueprints that guide significant investments and lead to a coherent architecture, maintaining a high ratio between strategic and tactical spend.
  • Develop roadmaps that influence investment planning and the sequencing of initiatives.
  • Continuously seek ways to improve the architectural function, eliminate waste, and find better ways of working.
  • Engage in continuous exploration to identify architecturally significant decisions, emerging capabilities, and architectural epics early in the process.
  • Define solution bounded contexts, their interfaces, and support the allocation of responsibilities, understanding deployment, and communicating interaction requirements.
  • Provide architectural oversight during delivery, supporting the incremental realisation of the strategic architecture through agile processes.
  • Champion best practices for development teams and guide platform architectural needs, ensuring alignment from enterprise direction to development, delivery, and support.
  • Responsibilities of a team leader (direct or matrixed) include recruitment, decision-making, coaching, mentoring, developing the team’s skills, setting goals and managing conflict.
  • Be an advisor, guide, mentor, and coach to AGL Architecture Team, helping team members take accountability for their careers, by helping them build a career development plan.
  • Take the lead on managing and driving recruitment requirements including participation in forums to discuss needs, who they are talking to, potential candidates and obtain support where you will be needed.
  • Engagement of Portfolio Management and Heads of Technology where people conflicts exist between Delivery Streams to provide guidance on portfolio priorities.
  • Build strong and collaborative relationship with the CIO, GM - Architecture and the extended technology leadership team.
  • Build relationships, networks and expertise with organisations, partners, consultants and specialists in leading a team (direct or matrixed) including recruitment, and emerging industries and markets.
  • Other practices and guilds (such as PMO/Value Office, project management, business analysis, engineering, cyber, procurement, development, testing, release management, risk management, ITSM) to continually improve end-to-end efficiency points, priorities and identify capability requirements and embed architecture into end-to-end IT processes.
What you’ll bring to the table
  • Mix of advanced technology and strategic business acumen, worked across multiple industry sectors with working knowledge of Energy and Telco industry.
  • Ideal candidates will have 12+ years of experience in technology and architecture leadership, be self-motivated, confident in working at a senior level and competent in operating in a matrix organisation in which results are driven through influence.
  • Broad and hands-on experience in performing a variety of architecture roles including Business Architect, Enterprise/Domain Architect, Application Architect, Data Architect, and Security Architecture across various industry sectors.
  • Ability to drive business transformation through thought leadership and strategic thinking, acting as trusted advisor to AGL business leaders.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and problem-solving skills with proven track record of providing clarity in tacking new and complex problems.
  • Working in Agile delivery, Scrum, Lean, SAFe desirable.
  • Transformation program experience desirable.
  • Experience with Saa S/cloud technologies, Adobe, self-service web/mobile solutions, Salesforce, Azure, AWS desirable.
