About the Role
This position offers a unique opportunity to join a dynamic collaboration between academia and industry, where the work will directly contribute to innovative treatments for metabolic diseases like obesity and type-2 diabetes. This role is funded by AmarX, a pioneering biotech company dedicated to the development and commercialisation of groundbreaking therapies for metabolic disorders.
This position will drive cutting-edge research at the intersection of neuroscience, metabolic science and translational medicine, as well as having the opportunity to collaborate with top-tier international scientists in both academia and industry to develop impactful treatments.This embedded role within AmarX offers a rare blend of scientific exploration and commercial application. The work will directly influence the development pipeline, moving innovative ideas from the bench to clinical trials and beyond.
Your responsibilities will include:
Designing and executing in vivo and in vitro experiments focused on metabolismCollecting, analysing and interpreting data using specialised tools
Delivering clear and timely data presentations at monthly board meetings that will inform decision making
Who We Are Looking For
You bring a strong desire and capability to build a career that bridges academic research and industry innovation. With demonstrated experience in conducting in vivo experiments using small laboratory animals to study metabolism, you have developed expertise in animal handling, anesthetisation, surgical techniques, and experimental design.Your proficiency in advanced research methodologies, quantitative and qualitative data analysis, and immunohistochemistry techniques—including RNAscope, immunofluorescence staining, and cryostat sectioning—positions you as a skilled researcher in this field.
Your excellent verbal and written communication skills enable effective collaboration with senior researchers, stakeholders, and research teams, fostering productive partnerships and engagement. Additionally, you have a proven ability to articulate and present findings in public forums, including conferences, underscoring your commitment to knowledge dissemination.With a strong track record of designing, performing, analyzing, and communicating experiments, you contribute significantly to advancing innovative research.
You will also have: A PhD and technical expertise in neuroscience, metabolic diseases, or a related discipline
Evidence of emerging local academic standing through research contributionsStrong time management skills and the ability to manage competing priorities in a dynamic environment

This role requires that the successful candidate must undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. The Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience and the Department of Physiology have long and illustrious history, and have now come together to produce a department with a remarkable breadth and depth in research expertise that underpin our key research themes of neuroscience, metabolism and diabetes and cell biology.
The increase in critical mass of our researchers will also help position the department as a key partner for Medical Research Future Foundation (MRFF) and other large-scale grant applications relating to chronic, developmental and degenerative diseases.
The goal of the combined department is to remain at the forefront of scientific research aimed at understanding the structure and function of the human body in health and disease, while employing novel and imaginative research methods.
