Mechanical Engineer
The Bigger Picture
At Andromeda Robotics, we’re not just imagining the future of human-robot relationships—we’re building it. As a pioneering social robotics startup, our mission is to revolutionise how humans connect with technology by introducing Abi, the world’s first empathetic companion robot. With a heart full of compassion and a spirit of kindness, Abi creates deep, meaningful connections with people, making the world a little warmer, a little brighter, and a lot more connected. Just like the beloved characters in your favourite stories, Abi is here to listen, understand, and share joyful moments.
Your Role in the Action
As a Mechanical Engineer at Andromeda Robotics, you’ll be vital to bringing Abi to life—translating pioneering concepts into robust, human-centred solutions. Working with a multidisciplinary team, you’ll be heavily involved in every stage of development, from early design to production, ensuring Abi’s structural and thermal components meet rigorous performance and manufacturing requirements. With every precision detail, you’ll help Abi embody empathy, warmth, and meaningful connection in the exciting new frontier of social robotics.
How You’ll Make an Impact- Collaborate with production team to design and build jigs, fixtures, and systems that keep Abi's performance consistent and dependable
- Work alongside cross-functional partners—electrical, software and industrial design—to seamlessly merge motors, sensors, and wiring into compact layouts that blend function with an empathetic identity
- Develop and refine the mechanical architecture by designing joints, mechanisms, and transmissions that balance mass, stiffness, and cost—ensuring every movement feels smooth and reliable
- Prototype and iterate rapidly, using analytical methods and simulations to validate designs, then adapt based on real-world insights
- Carefully select materials, finishes, and manufacturing methods to uphold a compassionate ethos while meeting demanding performance and sustainability targets
- Coordinate with suppliers to ensure parts are delivered to specification, timelines are respected
- Facilitate a seamless transition to volume production through clear documentation, testing protocols, and assembly guidelines
Requirements
What We Are Looking For- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Biomechanical, Robotics, Mechatronics, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field
- 2+ years of professional mechanical engineering experience (beyond internships or co-ops), with a focus on mechanism design and manufacturability
- Proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks, OnShape, or equivalent) for complex geometry
- Experience using FEA, simulations (e.g., MATLAB), and maintaining clear design documentation
- Hands-on integration of actuators, sensors, motors, wire harnesses, and communication buses
- Demonstrated knowledge of kinematics, dynamics, and advanced manufacturing (e.g., additive, composites) for weight-optimised designs
- Familiarity with PCB design and how it integrates into mechanical enclosures
- Proven ability to select materials and finishes for performance, sustainability, and cost-efficiency
- Experience coordinating with suppliers on specs, timelines, and DFM for mid- to high-volume production
- Hands-on background in designing robots or mechatronic systems with multiple Degrees of Freedom
- Ability to conduct in-depth failure analyses and contribute to FMEA processes
- Experience developing complex mechatronic assemblies with strain-wave, planetary, or cycloidal actuators
