Melbourne - Senior Health Safety Wellbeing Advisor
The pinnacle of MECCA is our people. We are looking for a Senior Health, Safety & Wellbeing Advisor to drive the health, safety & wellbeing at the operational and corporate level and establish and maintain a safety-first culture.
MECCA is seeking a Senior Health & Safety Adviser with a strong background in warehouse, logistics or other high risk operational environments, who has excellent relationship-building skills, the ability to learn, and is highly motivated to strategically partner with our Distribution Centre based in Tullamarine.The role is full-time and based on-site.
As the Senior Health, Safety & Wellbeing Advisor, you will work closely with the National Distribution Centre Manager, the Distribution Centre Operations Managers and Zone Managers.
The Role You Could Play
Working within the People & Education team, your role will partner with frontline business leaders to support MECCA’s Distribution Centre network across in both Australia and New Zealand to help support, design and deliver various health, safety and wellbeing initiatives aligned to risk.

Your responsibilities will also see you:
- Ensure daily compliance with workplace, health and safety regulations, including those set by other authorities, e.g. Work Safe
- Provide expert advice on safety-related matters and stay updated on industry best practices and legislative changes.
- Support the operations team with chain of responsibility activities and processes.
- Conduct and lead safety audits, risk assessments and risk control activities Educate and oversee team members adherance with health and safety proceduresas required, usually as part of daily walk-throughs or spot-check safety audits.
- Monitor key risks on a daily basis, e.g. Plant risk, Traffic management etc.
- Lead investigations any accidents to determine the root cause, provide recommendations to eliminate future hazards or risks, support the implementation of corrective and prevention strategies and ensure management follows through on recommendations.
- Ensure actions from inspections, audits, incident investigations, observations, hazard reports, team meetings and workforce meetings are captured, recorded and followed through until closed out.
- Support workplace health and safety activities and ensure WHS legislation and regulations are prudently met
- Provide advice and support to leaders across our business for injury/incident management
- Ensuring Safety communication and consultation processes are effectively implemented
- Encourage the reporting of safety concerns and suggestions for improvement, fostering an environment of continuous enhancement
- Daily review and follow up of incidents reported through the safety management system
- Support the development and improvement of safe work processes and procedures to ensure alignment across all work fronts for a continuous safe environment.
- Coordinating and implementing WHS strategies that deliver the highest quality outcomes and suitably trained staff Develop and provide training materials to build WHS capability
- Support with monitoring and roll out of WHS compliance training i.e. first aid, fire warden, and internal training
- Utilise data to identify trends, measure safety performance and drive continuous improvement initiatives in collaboration with our senior leaders
- Co-ordinate the site’s Health Safety Representative Committee
- Exposure to crisis management
- This position may require travel
What You Will Bring
We are looking for an autonomous and motivated person, who can adapt to changing environments, work flexibly and stay calm under pressure. You are articulate, process-driven and have excellent attention to detail. You will have a solid understanding of all workplace health and safety legislation and standards.
Additionally, you will be able to demonstrate:
- Certificate IV or higher in Occupational Health and Safety or demonstrated knowledge and experience sufficient to meet the requirements of the role
- Previous experience as a Safety professional in a warehouse environment or high risk industrial environment.
- ICAM Lead Investigator or Taproot Incident Investigation qualification (desired).
- Inspection and report writing skills.
- Experience working with dangerous goods.
- Strong understanding of relevant state and national WHS legislation in Australia & New Zealand
- Experience formulating and making robust and trusted recommendations to management
- Excellent attention to detail, problem solving, prioritisation skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong computer acumen and reasonable typing skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (particularly; Word and Outlook)
- Good communication (both written and verbal) skills
- Strong organisational skills
- Capacity to be flexible and resilient with the ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Proven competency in establishing a safety culture across the organisation whilst dealing with geographically dispersed stakeholders.
