Apex Façade Design is looking for a full-time Project Design Manager to join the team at our office in Rosebery!

Your Main Responsibilities

The Project Design Manager (PDM) / Designer is a critical role in the delivery of a project. In summary they are responsible for the delivery of the project to the various requirements of the various stakeholders. The PDM / Designer reports directly to the Project Director within Apex.

The responsibilities encompass delivery of all tasks of design, day to day point of contact and coordination with the Client and other stakeholders (eg Architect and other Consultants, organising the Apex team as required, review of incoming documentation, review of site and factory based activities of Apex and adherence to Apex quality standards.
The role is also responsible for financial outcomes and supervising any subcontracted work.
  • Assume responsibility for management of small, medium and large-scale projects.
  • Ensure delivery of projects complies with Client Brief (including performance, operational, ‘look and feel’, program and budgetary), legislative requirements and requirements of other consultants. Where required clarify these requirements.
  • Establish effective working relationships with the Client, Project Manager, Architect, Consultants, Builder and Subcontractors
  • Be responsible for reviewing external documentation by Client, Architect and other Consultants to establish requirements including design intent and specific performance and minimum requirements.
  • Establish conceptual design principles that align with the above requirements. Apply a multi-faceted understanding of engineering, manufacturing and construction principles to devise and deliver new / innovative /cost-effective approaches, to solve complex problems.
  • Make compelling presentations to Clients, Architects and other Consultants to explain issues, options and suggest ways forward aligned with project requirements
  • Ensure Safety in Design principles are utilised by staff.
  • Demonstrate their care about the wellbeing of themselves and others through actively participating in WHS activities / requirements such as Work Method Statements / SWMS.
  • Analyse the statistical properties of structures, tests the behaviour and durability of materials used in their construction/ project/ designs and supervises the construction/ project of all types of structures.
  • Design structures according to relevant standards to ensure they do not collapse, bend, twist or vibrate in undesirable ways in consideration present and future travel flow patterns taking into account population increase and needs change
  • Determine/ Propose construction methods, materials, quality standards and standard market
  • Organise and conduct internal reviews according to the Apex QA process
  • Attend project meetings and design meetings. Document actions or review minutes by others for accuracy
  • Prepare and manage the project design and program.
  • Participate and/or organise budget checks to review adherence to Clients budgetary requirements.
  • Generate documentation or organise production of documentation to required program and quality (technical and presentation) throughout all stages of the project. This will involve preparing design reports, design drawings (either preparing directly or supervising production as appropriate) and ensuring sufficient calculations are conducted to have confidence in design.
  • Advise on need for Visual Mock Ups (VMU) and Performance Mock Ups (PMU), nominate these. Review documentation and attend in person to establish adherence to project requirements and suitability of design and installation
  • Conduct site inspections and directing site labour and the delivery of construction materials, plant and equipment, and establishing programs for the coordination of site activities
  • Review external documentation by Contractors and Subcontractors to establish adherence to project requirements and suitability of design. This includes shop drawings, test results, calculations, sample forms, QA documentation etc
  • Studying architectural and engineering drawings and specifications to estimate total costs, and preparing cost plans and estimates as tools to assist in budgetary control
  • Attend the factory and site as required to establish the adherence to project requirements and suitability of fabrication and installation with Factory / Site Manager
  • Monitoring changes to designs, assessing effects on cost, and measuring, valuing and negotiating variations to designs. Advise on adherence to Apex scope and advise project Director of any possible variations or claims arising from changes to scope, contract documentation or requirements for additional work or re-work. Liaise with Client to discuss variation and write variation letter.
  • Assist with other projects within the group as required including partaking and contributing to reviews, conducting QA checks on outgoing drawings, shop drawings etc, responding to requests for input and other duties on other projects within team.
  • Assist in winning new projects by staying in touch with Clients, writing fee proposals and other tasks involved in procurement of new work.
  • Apply Project Management principles at a high level.
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in a variety of façade systems eg. curtain walls, glass walls, precast concrete, masonry, cladding systems etc. This includes understanding and experience in the manufacturing, procurement, logistics and installation processes.
  • Ability to understand and disseminate the technical and design principles and requirements, including calculations, tests, methods of verification. Ability to communicate this clearly to achieve the required outcomes
  • Lead and delegate tasks within the project team. Participate in resolution of tasks within the group.
  • Provide mentoring, guidance and training to less experienced staff.
  • Establish positive relationships with clients that enable ongoing work to be created.
  • Excellent skills in managing time, setting priorities, planning and organising.
  • Experienced and skilled in 2D and 3D software eg CAD, Revit, Inventor, Rhinoceros and a structural analysis package such as Strand 7. Very competent user of Microsoft Office and Project
  • Uses initiative to resolve issues or problems that arise at a senior level.
  • Communicates clearly and professionally with clients, other external parties, colleagues and managers. Ability to relate and communicate well to different levels of people within the company and industry.
  • Willing and able to provide guidance to less experienced staff.
  • Proactively seek personal and professional development opportunities.
  • Effective time management, prioritising and communication to ensure critical timelines are achieved at the level of quality required
  • Ability to work with no supervision except for project reviews and questions raised by PDM
  • Willing to work overtime and travel overseas as required to meet project requirements
  • BSc in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering or Architecture.

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent

Pay: $140,000.00 – $200,000.00 per year
